‘Irony’ around energy price rise in ACT

Energy economist Alan Moran says there is an “irony” around the rise in energy prices in the ACT.

It comes following news the electricity prices in Canberra have risen almost 12 per cent.

“The ACT government has signed a whole stack of contracts from 100 per cent renewables for wind farms and large-scale solar farms,” Mr Moran told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“And it has done so at a relatively high price. So last year when the price fell due to COVID … the ACT government had to compensate those people it contracted the electricity for, for those low prices.

“So it’s then had to stick – and it did it through the distributions system – a premium price on all households so that it can recoup those costs.”
